September 23rd Tournament Round-Up

The 13U Elite opened up the fall season with a 2-1 showing at the Fall Classic last weekend, playing up in the 14U Division.

Game 1 vs the Hudson Valley Hoosiers saw Jacob Gonzalez and Harrison Neil driving strong to the basket either scoring or drawing fouls from their opponent.  The two guards set the tempo scoring 10 and 12 points respectively, in a 45-16 win.  Ethan Garcia, 8pts and  Vinnie Sabatino with 7pts, also contributed in a very balanced attack offensively, with nearly the entire team putting points on the board.

In Game 2 the team continued to attack the basket with strong drives to the rim.  Ethan Garcia led the way with 16 points.  Nick Noone hit a few key “3’s” and Derek Hickman added 10pts.  After a slow start in Game 2, the boys refocused their defensive efforts, with key steals coming from Gavin Acuna and Ariel Lasalle.  Offensively, the team was able to settle down with outstanding PG play from Vinnie Sabatino, who dished to his teammates for some outstanding assists, leading a second half charge that saw a 1 point game turn into a 58-24 victory over the Silverbacks

In Game 3, the team faced an older Game Time Cougars team, who have played together for a number of years.  With an aggressive PG, the Cougars were able to turn a 3 point deficit around with a few key drives to the basket, taking advantage of our defensive miscues.  Harrison Neil hit timely 3’s in the first half that gave the New York Ratz the lead, but some miscues allowed the Cougars to take control of the game in the second half.  Without our best defensive effort, the Cougars took the Chip 46-34, leaving the 13U Elite team just short in their first tournament of the fall season.

When the NY Ratz 13U Elite team moves the ball offensively and plays strong team defense, there aren’t many teams in the area that can play with this strong group.  The team knows where they fell short last weekend and can't wait to see the Cougars again in the future.

The boys are ready to get back to work at practice and focus on the areas that they've identified to improve upon as the team moves forward this season! #BALLisLIFESTYLE #NewYorkRatz #GymRatzFam
